From Drumawhey, Co Down to Korumburra, South Gippsland.
Pioneer among the Gum Trees is a collection of some 60 letters written by an Irish immigrant, Thomas Nicholson, from Drumawhey near Newtownards in Co Down, who left home in 1879 and settled in Gippsland, South Eastern Australia.
Augmented by interesting and informative commentary and illustrations, the letters tell a fascinating story of adventure, courage, hard work, joy, hardship and sadness as Thomas, with his fellow pioneers, clears the huge eucalyptus trees and develops the land for agriculture.
